Webinar: Election Special – The Road Ahead for Work and HR

By Hannah Ford

1 July 2024

As a new government took office, we proudly sponsored a webinar with The HR World to discuss the potential impact on the world of work and HR.

The panel examined how the new administration’s manifesto would gradually unfold, focusing on key areas like changes in employment law, evolving workplace practices, and the increasing role of AI and technology, as well as the broader effects on the economy.

While many of the proposed changes are still emerging, the discussion covered anticipated adjustments, noting that some would require secondary legislation and therefore take longer to be implemented. A key takeaway was the need for HR professionals to stay informed and proactive, ensuring that systems and processes align with the government’s evolving agenda. Topics like diversity, equality, and workplace culture were also highlighted, particularly with the possibility of measures like the Gender Pay Gap reporting becoming a statutory requirement and the potential legal enforcement of the right to “switch off” outside of working hours.

The panel also focused on the government’s plan to address the nation’s skills gap, with a spotlight on potential changes to the Apprenticeship Levy. The aim is to foster economic growth by equipping people with the skills necessary for future success.

Although the government has committed to introducing some legislation within its first 100 days, the panel emphasized that most changes will be gradual, allowing businesses and HR teams time to adapt and implement the necessary steps to meet the new administration’s vision.
