Over the past 15 years in recruitment, I’ve spoken with thousands of job seekers. Some I’ve supported at the start of their careers, others I’ve reconnected with years later when they were ready for a new challenge. What always stands out is just how talented these individuals are. Yet for one reason or another, their LinkedIn profiles simply aren’t working for them.
Sometimes it’s down to an out-of-date profile, other times it’s the way information is presented, and occasionally it’s the technical side; the little tricks that help you show up in searches or the elusive algorithm that decides who gets seen. Whatever the reason, the result is the same: the right opportunities aren’t finding the right people.
On the other hand, I’ve seen professionals contacted by headhunters and employers out of the blue, simply because their profiles reflected their strengths clearly and gave a true picture of who they are.
LinkedIn as Your Living CV
LinkedIn isn’t just a static CV. It’s a living, breathing professional presence that should evolve as your career grows.
- Profiles need to reflect reality — I’ve seen great candidates overlooked because their LinkedIn was out of date or too vague, while others unlocked opportunities because their profile told a clear, up-to-date story.
- Activity helps — even small actions like commenting on an article or sharing a reflection make you more visible and approachable to recruiters.
- Specific criteria matter — recruiters and headhunters search by job titles, skills, and industry terms. If your profile doesn’t reflect those clearly, you may not appear. Demonstrating real experience against those criteria is key to being found.
Why I Created This Guide
After so many conversations across HR, IT, data and transformation recruitment, I realised there was a common theme: most professionals know LinkedIn is important, but many don’t know how to make it really work for them.
That’s why I created the LinkedIn Guide. It’s designed to be simple, practical, and easy to put into action. Inside, you’ll find tips on:
- How to optimise your headline, About section, and Experience
- Presenting your skills in a way that reflects your career direction
- Building credibility with recommendations and endorsements
- Staying visible through light-touch engagement
- Navigating some of the technical tricks that can help you show up more often
This isn’t about spending hours every day online. It’s about curating your profile so that when recruiters are searching, you’re found for the right reasons.
